World Cup Action at Smokeyard

Saturday, June 12th, 2010

Sheet-World-CupAlthough many bars in Mammoth are showing the World Cup (the Auld Dubliner and Giovannis for starters), Smokeyard is probably the closest you can get to the games without getting on a plane to South Africa. That’s because the Smokeyard is run by the Ravid brothers, who hail from the land of Ladysmith Black Mambazo and J.M. Coetzee.  To help you get into the spirit of the World Cup, they’ve introduced a new summer menu, complete with authentic, South African dishes. Check it out above.  They also have a great, daily happy hour from 4pm-6pm on Monday – Thursday and 2pm-6pm on Friday-Sunday.

Four Frothy Pints to Go?

Short of face shots, there’s no more intoxicating and authentic taste of Mammoth than the brews crafted by Mammoth Brewing Company. Unfortunately, for folks in Southern California, it’s almost impossible to get MBC beer.

But make no mistake, doors down south open wide when you have some Mammoth beers in hand. Sure, you can bring down some of their bottled offerings. But, we like the fresh-from-the-tap taste of growlers. At 64 ounces, these 1/2 gallon glass jugs are good for more than four pints (yeah, we know four pints equals 64 ounces, but that’s not accounting for the head).

During our last trip to LA, we found out that transporting ‘em was easy. Just follow these five, easy steps:

1. Go to the tasting room at 94 Berner Street (just behind the parking lot in The Village) and bring an insulated grocery bag. Don’t forget your reusable growlers or pick some up there.

2. Have a quick taste test.

3. Choose your brews and tell the folks behind the counter you’re traveling, so they put a little oomph into tightening the cap (to make sure it remains fresh and non-flat for as long as possible).

4. Place them in the insulated bag and fill it with snow. During spring, it’s often easier to fill the bag with snow at The Mill or Main.

5. Drive south, knowing that you’ll be welcomed with open arms and parched throats.

(Of course, you should periodically check on the bag for meltage, but the last time we did this – in April – there was zero water in the bag when we arrived in Downtown).

Four Seconds of Insanity

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

If you were here this weekend, you probably know about the craziness that was the WCI Rail Jam. The Unbound Crew outdid themselves building a three-story jib setup in The Village. At about 8pm riders like Olympian Greg Bretz, Mammoth local Tyler Flanagan and a bunch of pro snowboarders started sessioning the three different rails as a capacity crowd looked on.

$10,000 was a stake — this was the take for winning the athlete-judged contest. And for better or worse, there was just one trick people were talking about when the event was over. It’s below and by Minnesota-native Ryan Paul.

When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Ollie Their Friend’s Head.

Monday, April 19th, 2010

As you may know, Spring Fest kicked off yesterday. That’s marketing speak for the closing of Eagle and Canyon Lodge, where we try to distract riders and skiers from meditating on the sadness of this day by giving them the opportunity to see skiers and riders have their way with a patch of water AKA the Pond Skim.

Many believe yesterday’s Pond Skim was better than ever because of the good mix of costumes, athleticism, bikinis and even a tandem snowboard.

Another highlight? The shenanigans of Scott Blum.

The Volcom team rider splashily-slayed his first run while tipping back a cerveza and skipping across the water like a Bud-powered hovercraft.

But that’s not when it got exciting. When it was time for his buddy to go, Blum grabbed a Go Pro camera mounted to a ski pole and chased him down the hill.

Too bad his friend buried the nose of his board early in the water and with Blum hot in his wake, it looked like disaster was not only imminent but that it would be documented and the message would be the Jaws-like, “Don’t go in the water!” as well as “Just because there’s women in bikinis, doesn’t mean it’s safe!”

Anyway, disaster was averted. A different friend of Blum’s told us the snowboarder didn’t even have time to think — he just crouched down and popped the biggest ollie he could, narrowly averting decapitating his buddy and not even upsetting the beer in  his hand.
