Super Bowl Weekend In and Around Mammoth
February 6th, 2010
Yesterday, SkiChannel.com wrote, “Mammoth Mountain has packed on another 10 inches, and the whiteness is about to start falling in the So-Cal mountains. Snow will continue to fall through tomorrow night. By then another two feet of snow will have been packed on to Mammoth’s mammoth sized snow base.”
They were dead on: in the last 24 hours, we’ve received about a foot, which according to our calculations puts our season snowfall totals a Woolly’s whisker above 300″!
That’s right, three hundy as the kids say, and it’s only the first week of February. If it keeps up like this we could easily have another five months of ski season! But no need to worry about slathering yourself in sunblock on 4th of July before getting some turns in yet.
Conditions this weekend should be great. Here in town, the sounds of avi bombs have been echoing off the mountain for some time. And there’s only a slight breeze at Main. Even the top isn’t too gusty, so the peak could definitely open if this weather doesn’t change. Since this storm dropped about 18″, the top should be great.
And if you want to get conditions and lift openings sent to your phone, it’s now easier than ever. Text “MAMMOTH” to 20123 for an up to date conditions report or text “LIFTS” to 20123 to get real time info on open, expected and temporary weather hold lifts.
Lastly, if you’re still trying to figure out where you’re going to post up for the Big Game, there’s a list of options and some advice below. Just scroll down until you see bikini bootie.

Thursday, February 4 In and Around Mammoth
February 4th, 2010
It’s a beautiful, sunny Thursday here in Mammoth. Temps are in the mid-20s and although some clouds are out and about, the corduroy is abundant and the riders and skiers are few and far between. If the weather forecasters are correct, there won’t be many corduroy days in the near future. A storm is supposed to roll in tonight, leaving us with 1′ – 2′ feet before it’s done.
As you know today is Thursday, which isn’t just the day before Friday to us — it’s the day local shred shop, Wave Rave sends out their weekly snow report. This week Cory offers up a conditions update, weather forecast and his ultimate, length-wise run:
Another winter storm coming this weekend…2 feet by Saturday night! The mountain is awesome right now after all the snow that we recieved a couple weeks ago. If you want to do the “ultimate” run (length wise) then this is what you do…Go to the top of the mountain and drop into Daves, then cut over by five, head towards South Park and hit a couple of features, then cut out on the groomer to head to Wonderland Park / Ski back trail, form there you can goof off in the mini park/pipe and go to Canyon or take the ski-back trail all the way to the Village. It is a 3,000ft+ vertical run and you travel miles. I did it yesterday and your legs are burning by the time you get down, but it is a blast.
With the snow coming in, it should be a great weekend of riding. Don’t worry about missing the Super Bowl, either. Most bars and restaurants in town are doing something special for the Colts-Saints face-off/Bud Bowl. Since kickoff isn’t until 3:30pm, you can easily get a thousands of feet of vertical in before the game. And by the looks of things, it may be a powder day.
Lastly, Mammoth’s slopeside lodging properties will put you up for free on Sunday night if you book a room with them for Friday and Saturday, which is the closest thing you’ll get to a sure thing on Super Bowl Sunday.

John’s Pizza Works – Game time food and drink specials

Wednesday, February 3 In and Around Mammoth
February 3rd, 2010
It’s a clear, windless day here at Mammoth. And from the looks of the parking lot, it should be pretty quiet out there on the hill. So, if you’re around in the morn, it’s a great day for some quick, groomer runs. Around town today, there’s plenty going on.
One our favorite things? Half-price growler refills at Mammoth Brewing Company’s Tasting Room. There’s more info below. But one caveat, we were over there yesterday were told it can get a little hectic after 3pm. Sounds fun to us, but if you wanna breeze in and out, get there on the early side. They open at 10am.
Also, EJ Poplawski will be speaking tonight at the Westin. He’s an X Games athlete and above-the-knee amputee who lost part of his leg following a horrific ski accident. The talk is free and there’s more info here.
Events Around Town
All Day – Mammoth Brewing Company’s Tasting Room – Half-price growler refills. Most refills are about $4 and that works out to about a buck a pint. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, this beer is so fresh it’s like getting artisan bread that’s still warm straight from the oven.

X Games Athlete and Amputee To Speak in Mammoth!
February 2nd, 2010
Although you may not know the name EJ Poplawski, you may have read his story, which appeared in the ski and outdoor media. Poplawski skied better than most do in their dreams, until one single run undid everything.
He was competing in Crested Butte in the 10th Annual U.S. Telemark Extreme Freeskiing Championships and his run was going well when he dropped one last cliff.
Although he stuck the landing, one of his skis didn’t do as well and broke on impact. He’d stayed upright and tried to continue down the steep face on his single ski at about 40mph.
That’s right, 40mph.
As if that’s not difficult enough, his broken ski was still attached to his boot, like a useless outrigger with a mind of its own. And Poplawski was heading towards a cluster of aspens.
He navigated around all the trees but one: a single, 3″ diameter arbor. Unlike a slalom gate, it didn’t break away. But his knee sure did, rupturing the popliteal artery.
Ski patrol was quick to his rescue and he was soon on his way to the hospital. By the time he arrived it was too late. Too much damage was done and a few days later his leg was amputated above the knee. That was in 2006.
Two years ago he returned to the snow and his progress was amazing. But don’t take our word for it. Watch the video below. Or, even better, come out on Wednesday to hear his speak at the Westin. It’s a free event and all info in the poster above.
Groundhog’s Day In and Around Mammoth
February 1st, 2010Laverne and Shirley? Yes. When we found out about what’s going on at Mammoth Brewing Company (MBC) this afternoon, it’s the fist thing that popped into mind because MBC is opening their doors today to the public so interested folks can see what the canning process is really like.
As any kids of the 70s know, Laverne and Shirley also worked in a brewery, so…
Swing by Whiskey Creek, home of Mammoth Brewing Company’s vats, to get an up close look at how they get their beer into cans. They’ll be canning the Real McCoy Amber. To see it, get there before 3pm. Maybe you’ll even see a glove atop a beer on the conveyor belt, but we’re not making any promises.
And if you want to try some of their great cerveza, be sure to swing by their tasting room for some samples.
Once you’ve had beer this fresh, it’s tough to drink anything else. It’s like comparing artisan bread that’s fresh from the oven to a bag of Wonder.
And Happy Groundhog’s Day.
Punsutawany Phil saw his shadow this morning and you know what that means — six more weeks of winter. Eastern Sierra translation? We should be riding and skiing until at least July 4th!
Have fun out there and remember, “Don’t Drive Angry”.
